Thinking about “formaldehyde removal” after a renovation?
Over the years, we’ve had many customers ask: “My new furniture and renovation smell—what should I do?” Many immediately think about hiring a service to remove formaldehyde, but we always ask: If these chemicals keep releasing over time, can a one-time treatment really solve the problem?
The truth is, formaldehyde and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) don’t just disappear overnight. They continue to off-gas for years, sometimes without any noticeable smell. What’s more concerning? Many “formaldehyde removal” services use chemicals themselves. Ever noticed how the technicians wear protective masks while applying the treatment? Isn’t it ironic to combat chemicals with more chemicals?
Formaldehyde vs. VOCs—What’s the Difference?
Formaldehyde |
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) |
|
Definition |
A specific chemical, colorless but with a strong irritating smell |
A broad category of chemicals that can evaporate into the air, including formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene |
Sources |
Industrial adhesives, plywood, MDF, coatings |
Paints, adhesives, synthetic materials, cleaning agents, perfumes, fuel combustion |
Health Impact |
Irritates the eyes, nose, and throat; prolonged exposure may affect the respiratory system |
Can cause headaches, allergies, respiratory issues, and some VOCs (like benzene) are carcinogenic |
Release Behavior |
Long-term release, especially in warm and humid conditions |
Some VOCs evaporate quickly, while others (like benzene) may persist for years |
Odor |
Strong chemical smell, like a newly renovated space; at low concentrations, it may not be noticeable |
Some VOCs have strong smells (e.g., paint, glue), while others are odorless but still harmful |
How to Avoid |
Use low-formaldehyde or formaldehyde-free adhesives and materials; avoid MDF and pressed wood |
Choose low-VOC or VOC-free paints and furniture; ensure good ventilation |
What do we do differently?
At LITOOC, every decision we make—from material selection to production—is guided by one simple question: Will this create a home where people can truly feel at ease?
Our factories, whether in Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia, are European-managed and adhere to the strictest EU regulations. This means our production process naturally operates at a much higher standard than most in the market.
For over a decade, visitors to our showroom and workshop—including those with sensitive immune systems, skin conditions, or heightened sensitivity to air quality—often tell us: “It feels good here. The air is light, there’s no chemical smell.”
It may seem like a small detail, but to us, it’s a quiet confirmation of everything we’ve worked for.
How do we ensure our furniture is truly non-toxic?
🌿 Low-VOC adhesives—minimizing emissions from the start
Woodworking requires bonding. We use EU-standard low-VOC adhesives to significantly reduce harmful emissions right from the source.
🌿 Rubio Monocoat: a non-toxic finish that lets wood breathe
We exclusively use Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, the first zero-VOC industry-leading wood finish. Instead of forming a thick plastic-like layer, it deeply bonds with the wood, preserving its natural texture and breathability.
🌿 Eco-friendly water-based paints—another safe alternative
For some designs, we opt for high-quality water-based coatings, all compliant with EU safety standards, ensuring they are breathable and safe for indoor environments.
🌿 Easy maintenance, natural protection
Spilled coffee? Red wine? Everyday stains? A simple wipe, and it’s gone. No need for harsh chemicals—just furniture designed to last.
A healthier home starts with better choices.
When we share this with our customers, many have a moment of realization: “If I just choose furniture that’s free from VOCs, I won’t need to worry about removing formaldehyde in the first place.” And that’s exactly what we hope for.
In Hong Kong and Taiwan, transparency in material sourcing for renovations is rare. You may see a beautifully designed space, but can you be sure what materials were used? We can’t change the entire market, but we can promise this: Every piece of LITOOC furniture is something you can touch, live with, and trust.
Your home deserves a choice that feels as good as it looks.
